No Idle Tale
We often pick on Thomas as if he was the only one who had his doubts about Jesus’ resurrection. But the resurrection account at the end of Luke makes it clear that Thomas wasn’t alone. The other disciples, Peter in the lead, doubted too. When the women return to the apostles and tell them that Jesus was not in the tomb, Luke tells us that “these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.” The disciples’ unbelief is startling to the modern reader who has become so accustomed to the ending of the Easter story that we don’t see it for the shocking turn of events that it was. God has taken the most tragic event of history and turned it into the most beautiful event of history! Now, if God is able to make beauty from ashes in an event as profound as the death of Christ, just imagine what God can do with your life!
