David's name is mentioned more often than any other human character in the Old Testament. He is front and center for half of 1 Samuel, all of 2 Samuel, and the opening of 1 Kings (not to mention much of 1 Chronicles). He's kind of a big deal. The origin story of David, however, is not what you might expect. It is intentionally contrasted with that of Saul, Israel's first king, and it sets David up as an underdog from the very beginning. But as with much of Scripture, God prefers the unlikely hero as God's power is made perfect in weakness.
