The Spirit of the Living God
The day of Pentecost commemorates the day on which the Spirit of God was poured out on the followers of Jesus fifty days after Easter. It is a day that literally and symbolically parallels the giving of the Ten Commandments in the Old Testament. To keep the Old Covenant, one needed the Ten Commandments, and to keep the New Covenant, one needs the presence of the Holy Spirit. But while the Holy Spirit plays a critical role in the early church's understanding of the time and place within which they find themselves in a post-resurrection world, today's church often has little room for Holy Spirit. May we learn to plead with the hymn writer, "Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me."
