The Misunderstood Messiah
In our 21st century world, the title, Messiah, has lost some of the meaning it once held in first-century Palestine. For the first Jewish followers of Jesus, the claim that he was the Messiah was first and foremost the claim that he was a king. In particular, he was the king of the kingdom of heaven that he continually proclaims throughout the gospels. The only problem? It is clear from our text today that even his own disciples did not understand what sort of kingdom he was coming to establish. Jesus’ kingdom does not conform to the norms of our world but flips them on their head.
