The Joy of Zechariah and Elizabeth

Passage: Isaiah 9; Luke 1:8-17
Service Type:

We have all known the pain of loss and the heartache of unmet desires. Zechariah and Elizabeth know this too. They are said to be “righteous” having kept all the commandments and the laws of the Torah, and yet they are without child. A barren woman, in the ancient world, is a woman who feels shame, or as Luke says of Elizabeth, she feels “reproach,” as if she’s done something wrong, as if her barrenness is a curse from God. With this backdrop, the angel’s announcement to Zechariah that he and Elizabeth will conceive is all the more joy-filled. And as the angel goes on to say, “You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great before the Lord.”
