The Demands of Easter
Age old writing advice says an author should "show rather than tell" what he or she wishes to say. John is a good author. Rather than explaining to us with a lecture what "love" means, he simply points to the actions of Jesus. Love is Jesus laying down his life for the world. But with this beautiful act comes a demand, one that is difficult--even impossible--to achieve, though we must try. The demand is simple: love as Jesus loved. Lay down your life for your brothers and sisters as Jesus laid down his. But, as with Jesus, the result of such a demand is surprising. Resurrection! Life, not death. Joy, not darkness. Victory, not defeat.
