As Israel moves from slavery to freedom, Moses tells them not to forget the journey that has led them to this point. He knows that goodness awaits them on the other side of the Jordan. The freedom tastes sweet because of the bitterness of slavery. The houses in the promised land feel so spacious because the slave's quarters in Egypt were so cramped. But God knows that the human temptation is to forget the ways in which God rescues, to narrow one's perspective, and to take credit for a gift that was just that: a gift. May we be reminded of God's grace, revel in gratitude, and embrace the goodness that God has prepared for us.
