Passage: 1 Samuel 8:4-9; Acts 1:6-8
Service Type:

Mirroring the rebellion in the Garden of Eden, Israel's request for a king is seen by God as a covert desire for self-rule rather than be ruled by God. Before Israel even has their first king, the trajectory of the monarchy is set, and it does not lead toward union with God; it leads toward exile. Lifetimes later, Jesus does not come preaching about the Kingdom of Israel but the Kingdom of God. The difference is important.
