In this third week of Advent, we discuss the topic of joy. The sermon can be summed up in just three words: Joy requires selflessness. When the wise men see the star that leads them to Jesus, Matthew tells us “they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.” Their joy is rooted in a life lived in selfless pursuit of something greater than themselves. Their joy stems from the awe and wonder they experience in the beauty of creation as they look to the stars of the heavens. And lastly, their joy comes from hearts of gratitude and kindness that not only lead them to lavish gifts upon the newborn king but to worship him! May we be so blessed as to find this selfless joy today.
